The first in a series of collaborations between music educator Marilyn Copeland Davidson and Paul Winter, the 'Teacher's Guide' takes an innovative co-curricular approach using lesson plans which explore each composition of Paul Winter's Grammy Award-nominated album, EARTH: VOICES OF A PLANET, as a bridge to other subjects, generating creative exercises and integrating science and arts through music. Student activities include Chapters are divided into sections designed for use by classroom teachers without musical experience as well as by music educators. Designed to develop active, participatory listening, encourage communication skills, stimulate self-expression, provoke students to draw inspiration from their environment to create their own improvised music and contribute to deepening environmental awareness, the guide can be used as a sequence of lessons or in part. The first (prototype) edition of 'The Teacher's Guide to EARTH, VOICES OF A PLANET', published by Earth Music Productions, is available from Living Music for just $5 (plus shipping). The more developed later edition includes Orff arrangements, with an arrangement by Dr.Robert deFrece of 'Garden of the Earth' (the Russian Folk Song originally recorded on the Living Music album EARTHBEAT). "The second half, labeled 'Musical Discoveries', provides suggestions and material geared towards creating a workable setting for musical improvisation by the student, based on musical understandings gained from listening to each selection of the recording. Although these require musical expertise on the part of the teacher, any of the ideas could also be used by a musically-trained classroom teacher. Each selection's teaching notes begins with a brief description of possible Outcome-based Objectives (including suggestion for portfolio assessments) and ends with a section entitled FINAL EXPERIENCE, in which a culminating creative experience is more completely described.
