1990's1990: EARTH: VOICES OF A PLANET, premiered at Times Square during New York's celebrations for the Twentieth Anniversary of Earth Day, receives a Grammy nomination. The Paul Winter Consort sets music to THE MAN WHO PLANTED TREES, the acclaimed fable by Jean Giono, in their first spoken-word album, published by Chelsea Green. Paul Winter and Roger Payne visit Japan as part of a combined lecture and concert tour, promoting the cause of whale-watching as opposed to whale-killing. The Paul Winter Consort makes its third tour of Japan and, at the invitation of His Highness, gives a private performance at the Imperial Palace for Prince Takamodo, cousin of the Emperor of Japan. At the invitation of Irkutsk TV, Paul Winter sails the length of Siberia's endangered Lake Baikal, researching an album of music "to celebrate the natural beauty of Russia".1991: Paul Winter takes part in Japan's largest ever environmental symposium. He receives the Master of Arts Award from the Aveda Corporation and, for his music "that celebrates the sacredness of life", the Courage of Conscience Award from the Sherborn Life Experience School and Peace Abbey. In September Paul Winter celebrates his marriage to Chez Liley. Living Music releases TURTLE ISLAND, an album of poetry by Gary Snyder accompanied by the Paul Winter Consort. 1992: The Consort's third tour of Spain is recorded and the resulting album, SPANISH ANGEL, released the following year. Living Music celebrates its tenth anniversary with the release of ANTHEMS: 10 YEARS OF LIVING MUSIC. 1993: SOLSTICE LIVE! is released, recorded during the Consort's famous seasonal celebrations in New York. 1994: SPANISH ANGEL wins a coveted Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. 1995: Paul Winter wins a second Grammy Award when his innovative PRAYER FOR THE WILD THINGS is named Best New Age Album. DEEP VOICES, the sequel to SONGS OF THE HUMPBACK WHALE, is released. The Paul Winter Consort makes its debut performance in London with MISSA GAIA. Solstice Journey takes the Consort's Solstice Celebrations on tour to over 20 cities during the winter of 1995-6. 1996: Paul Winter produces two new albums for Living Music: CELTIC SOUL by Nóirín Ní Riain, and PETE by Pete Seeger. The Paul Winter Consort gives its second performance in Zagreb to celebrate Earth Day. Paul Winter's dedication and his achievements both as musician and environmentalist receive further recognition when he is named Music Advocate of the Year by the Connecticut Music Educators' Association, he receives a Merit Award from the Northwestern University Alumni Association, a Promise to the Earth Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation, and an Honorary Degree from Juniata College. Paul becomes a father when his daughter, Keetu, is born. 1997: The Living Music album PETE by Pete Seeger and friends, produced by Paul Winter, wins the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album of 1996. The Paul Winter Consort tours Spain with singer Nóirín Ní Riain. The Consort and the Winfield and Salina (Kansas) Regional Symphony Orchestra premier Grasslands, a work by cellist Eugene Friesen for Consort, symphony orchestra and chorus, celebrating the endangered grasslands of the world. Irish Uilleann piper, Davy Spillane, joins Paul Winter, Paul Halley and Cathie Ryan for Paul Winter's Summer Solstice Celebration. CANYON LULLABY, Paul's long-awaited solo saxophone album is released in October. Recorded in Surround Sound in the Grand Canyon, it is the culmination of three years' of recording and researching expeditions to the Grand Canyon. |
1990's (cont.)1998: CANYON LULLABY is nominated for a Grammy Award in January. In July, Winter signs an agreement with the windham hill group for the worldwide distribution of Living Music. BRAZILIAN DAYS, a new recording of Bossa Nova gems by Paul Winter and Oscar Castro-Neves, is released in July, and PAUL WINTER - GREATEST HITS, a collection of the milestones in Paul's long musical journey, is released in the Autumn.1999: In January, Sharon Isbin's album JOURNEY TO THE AMAZON, on which Paul Winter is a guest artist, is nominated for a Grammy Award in the newly-formed Classical Crossover Category. CELTIC SOLSTICE, a contemporary celebration of the Summer Solstice featuring newcomers to the Living Music label from the Irish and North American community, is released in February. In May, Paul is the musical director for 'Altoona America', a concert featuring 250 performers to celebrate the sesquicentennial of Paul's hometown, Altoona (Pennsylvania). The double album ALTOON AMERICA is released by the Altoona Sesquicentennial Commission later in the year. LULIE THE ICEBERG, composed by Jeffrey Stock, featuring Paul Winter together with Pamela Frank, Yo-Yo Ma and Sam Waterston, is released by Sony Classical. Paul is presented with the first annual Ken Kuhn Scholarship Foundation Award in Altoona. The Sixth Annual Summer Solstice Celebration in June feature guest artists from Ireland, Armenia and Rumania, as well as from North America. In October, Paul's work THE WORLD TREE is premiered at Bucknell University (PA, USA). The 20th Anniversary Winter Solstice Celebration in December features 23 performers, including Mickey Hart, Arto Tuncboyaciyan, The Forces of Nature and the Paul Winter Consort. 20002000: In February, Winter's CELTIC SOLSTICE wins a Grammy Award as Best New Age Album of 1999, the fourth time an album on which he performs has won a Grammy Award. In April, Paul is presented with the Spirit of the City Award in recognition of his work to further the Arts in New York City. Living Music's new releases feature Armenian musician Arto Tuncboyaciyan. JOURNEY WITH THE SUN by Paul Winter and the Earth Band grew out of Winter's annual Solstice Celebrations and also features special guests which include Mickey Hart and Niamh Parsons. EVERY DAY IS A NEW LIFE is Tuncboyaciyan's US debut album. Brazilian singer Luciana Souza is a special guest at the 21st Annual Winter Solstice Celebration in December.2001: JOURNEY WITH THE SUN is nominated for a Grammy Award in the World Music category. Paul Winter's THE WORLD TREE is performed at Oneonto (NY, USA) in April. In May, Paul Winter and the Earth Band are invited to perform with the Boston Pops orchestra in a concert recorded for television broadcast by PBS.
